Sterling Library carrels

shelves of books and a carrel in Sterling stacks with a small window having a Gothic arch behindStudy space was at a premium during our freshman year when most of us were housed in multiple-roommate suites on the Old Campus. I was highly motivated, not so much to succeed as not to fail. I found my sanctuary high in the stacks of Sterling Library where there were cubbyholes that were reserved for graduate students, but available for use by the rest of us. Here I could feel like a student-monk, searching for a foothold in the community of scholars amidst stacks of dusty, seemingly ancient tomes.
